Chair Letter
Hi everyone,
My name is Lori Garavartanian and I’ll be serving as your chair for the Universal Postal Union committee at BruinMUN 24. I’m a fourth-year political science and applied linguistics student at UCLA, which means I’ll be graduating way too soon. When I’m not doing MUN, I love watching sports (basketball, football, and motorsports if we’re being precise), reading books of any genre, and traveling anywhere in the world. I’m also hoping to go into employment or labor law in the future and am currently working towards that.
My involvement in Model United Nations goes back to 8th grade, when I competed in my first committee, a novice UNHCR hosted at BruinMUN! Since then, I’ve chaired two novice committees here at BruinMUN, which is a complete full circle moment for me. I’ve also chaired a couple of committees at LAMUN, our college conference which happens in the spring. Beyond that, I currently compete with MUN at UCLA’s travel team. This means I know what it feels like to be nervously awaiting the start of committee or carefully navigating the intricacies of bloc formation, because I also have to do it multiple times a year.
The Universal Postal Union is a committee I’m very excited to be bringing to all of you. It might not be the body most think of when they conceptualize the United Nations, but it is a necessary and critical organ. The UPU is the postal sector’s primary forum for international cooperation. This means it coordinates postal policies among member nations and facilitates a uniform global postal system. The UPU sets general rules for international mail exchanges and makes recommendations to improve quality of mail and parcel services. As delegates of the UPU this BruinMUN, it is your job to make sure postal policies across the globe are well-regulated and equitable. Being able to receive mail is a privilege many of us take for granted and a process that can be life-changing. It is your job to create this access for as many people as possible.
I encourage you all to think about mail deeply, probably for the first time in your life! Think outside the box and outside the parcel… I can’t wait to hear all your amazing solutions this November and as always please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have.
See you soon!
