Committee Profile
Mercado Libre (MELI) is an Argentinian e-commerce company, vastly popular across Latin America. With “Mercado Libre” directly translating to “free market” in Spanish, the committee grounds itself in a strong economic foundation and emphasis on the democratization of commerce. With users at the crux of the company’s mission, MELI aims to maintain customer loyalty and transform the financial landscape for Latin American entrepreneurs, while also keeping account of the environmental consequences of its socioeconomic changes. Other challenges that MELI may face include anti-trust suits and cybersecurity breaches.
As members of the MELI board of directors, delegates will be tasked with navigating the complexities of rapid commercial expansion, volatile stock fluctuations, and responsible technological integration. With the committee beginning on the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rocky resignation of CEO Marcos Galperi simultaneously, MELI has to think quickly, adapt wisely, and innovate relentlessly to stay ahead of the increasingly competitive e-commerce market.
Chair Letter
Dear Delegates,
My name is Abigail Tsai, and it is a great honor to serve as your chair for the MercadoLibre Board of Directors (2020). Welcome!
As a quick introduction, I am a third-year student majoring in Physiological Science (yes, I am indeed pre-med). In the future, I hope to specialize, but as of now, I have not decided on a specialty yet—though I suppose that’s what the next 10+ years of education will be for. Aside from my pre-health pursuits, you may find me exploring LA on public transit with friends, practicing cello, chilling in the botanical garden, or playing escape rooms.
My MUN journey began in my freshman year of high school. Truth be told, I joined because the club advisor promised extra credit for social studies, but after competing in my first conference, I fell in love with both the dynamic activity and the community it cultivated. At UCLA MUN, I have had the opportunity to crisis staff, dais staff, and chair twice: Novice SOCHUM (BruinMUN 31) and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (LAMUN XIX). I am beyond excited to return to the dais again for this year’s BruinMUN!
BruinMUN holds a special place in my heart since it was the first and only university-run conference I ever attended while in high school (I competed in GA Plenary!). I thoroughly enjoyed my experience as a BruinMUN delegate, and I hope that you all will too. Who knows, some of you may be chairing or CDing here in a few years!
As directors of the MELI board, you will be tasked with navigating the complexities of commercial expansion, stock crashes, and technological integration. It is my hope that this weekend will be overflowing with innovation as you parse through the challenges that await.
Looking forward to seeing you all in committee! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
All the best,
Abigail Tsai | Chair, MercadoLibre Board of Directors | BruinMUN 32
CD Letter
Dear Delegates,
Hello! My name is Kaiyi Pan (she/her), and I will be your MELI Board of Directors 2020 Crisis Director for BruinMUN. I am a second-year student at UCLA, majoring in political science and economics (planning to minor in music industry and potentially drop econ...). As an international student from China, in my free time, I enjoy exploring fun places in LA, trying out good food, taking landscape and portrait photography, singing (I make a bit of music too), and Chinese cultural dance.
I have always been passionate about speech and debate and wanted to join a MUN conference ever since high school. So, I joined UCLA MUN in my freshman year, participating in MUN tryouts, and gaining experience in BruinMUN31 (UN Women) and LAMUN (UCLA’s collegiate conference) as a crisis staffer, staging conflicts from the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act in San Francisco. It was then I found myself enjoying participating in MUN conferences more as a staffer instead of a delegate, which is also why I decided to continue to staff for BruinMUN as a Crisis Director this year.
Our committee, the MELI Board of Directors 2020, will be diving into the dynamic world of corporate strategy and crisis management. As the board of directors for MercadoLibre, one of the largest e-commerce and financial technology companies in Latin America, you will face various challenges and opportunities. From navigating market expansions and regulatory changes to addressing cybersecurity threats and corporate social responsibility, this committee will test your ability to think critically, negotiate effectively, and develop innovative solutions.
I look forward to seeing how you all tackle these complex issues and lead MercadoLibre through a pivotal year in its history, see you soon!
Kind regards,
Kaiyi Pan | Crisis Director, MercadoLibre Board of Directors | BruinMUN 32
