Committee Profile
GA Plenary is one of the most integral parts of the United Nations. It serves as a platform to discuss the most critical issues that face the global community. From humanitarian crises to ensuring fair and equitable laws on upcoming or existing industries to a wide range of conflicts, it is this body that is tasked with tackling these issues. GA Plenary is made up of all 193 current UN member states. Unlike other United Nations bodies, the GA Plenary gives each country an equal mouthpiece regardless of their respective economic, military, or political state. Keeping the nature of this committee as a global community, I implore all delegates to engage in discourse with as many perspectives as possible to come to comprehensive solutions.
At this years iteration of BruinMUN, BruinMUN 32, our committee will be in charge of tackling two of the most forthcoming issues of our day:
Topic A: Twenty First Century Gig Workers and Safety Within the Platform Economy
Topic B: Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity
Topic A: Our first topic here is to address the vast inequalities and exploitation of workers that have arisen in congruence with the gig economy. Such as the case with many new opportunities, this one shares a set of pros and cons. On one hand, the ability to create jobs and allow flexible work hours have created a monetary boost in many households and national economies. However, they have also created unsafe environments and countless cases of exploitation. Delegates will have to work together to come up with a resolution that will hopefully extract as much of the benefits while cracking down on the concerns that currently exist.
Topic B: Topic B on the other hand also challenges delegates to protect the rights of a working group, but in this case journalists. Many countries have countless regulations and laws regarding the rights of journalists. This also expands to how the content that they create is censored and distributed. This is a contentious topic that discusses the ideas of impunity and how journalists, and their content is handled, on an international level. This topic will require delegates to walk the delicate line that respects countries rights of sovereignty but also ensures that journalists, whistleblowers, and reporters are treated with human rights.
Chair Letter
Hello Delegates,
My name is Raghu Kommalapaty and I will be the Chair for GA Plenary committee at BruinMUN 32! While I had the pleasure of chairing this committee at our last iteration of BruinMUN, I want to thank you all once again for taking the time out of your busy schedule to prepare for and attend this committee. I also want to be the first to welcome you to what I am hoping to be an intriguing and thoughtful committee.
I am currently a senior at UCLA where I am double majoring in both Global Studies and Economics. I am a proud Massachusetts native, so hopefully this gives you an understanding into my love for both basketball and football, go Celtics and Patriots, as well as all things that come with the snow. I also love to play any sort of pick-up sports as well as enjoy gaming.
I started MUN in 7th grade and have never looked back. I loved the idea of being able to put unique ideas and solutions to work while meeting amazing, new people with similar ideas and interests. When I joined MUN at UCLA I was slightly unsure about how college MUN would function and whether I would fit in or not. However, I found my community here and loved the atmosphere, support, and people from not only my own club but from the countless delegates I have met from across the country. Since joining MUN in college I have staffed both our highschool conference and collegiate conference, had the pleasure of being the USG of GA at our most recent BruinMUN, been the Secretary-General of our collegiate conference, and am currently one of our head delegates for our nationally ranked travel team.
I am incredibly excited to be able to Chair such a large committee that tackles some of the most pressing issues today. I cannot wait to see how you all as delegates will be able to come up with creative and unique solutions, all while demonstrating the leadership skills that are absolutely needed in today's society. I can not wait to meet all of you at BruinMUN 34 and see how you decide to undertake finding solutions to the world's most imperative problems.
Best,
Raghu Kommalapaty | Chair, Plenary | BruinMUN 32
