Committee Profile

The Group of Twenty (G20) is an intergovernmental organization comprising 19 of the world’s largest economies and the European Union (EU) who meet to discuss pertinent world issues in regards to economics. The G20 is crucial to ensuring major economic topics, ranging from trade and energy to climate change mitigation and corruption are addressed extensively and multilaterally. In this committee, delegates will have the unique opportunity to discuss pressing world issues in a more intimate environment, allowing for more nuanced discussions and solutions and a greater level of collaboration.

At BruinMUN 32, the G20 will be addressing two prevalent topics which address economic turmoil:

Topic A: Banking and Financial Reform (2008 Financial Crisis)

Topic B: Debt Relief in Developing Countries

Topic A will address the lasting impact of the 2008 Financial Crisis, which caused a steep decline in global economic activity, high unemployment rates, and a massive hit to the stock market. In this committee, we will primarily focus on how the financial crisis still impacts the global economy through finding solutions tailored towards long-term stability of the banking sector and prioritizing international cooperation. Topic B will delve into the delicate balance between economic support and economic reliance. In many cases, the economies of developing nations who have received economic support are left crippled due to the large debt burden they owe. Thus, through finding actionable solutions that create a healthy balance between feasibility, economic recovery, and social development programs, delegates will work to uplift struggling economies.

Chair Letter

Dear Delegates,

Thank you all for coming to BruinMUN 32. My name is Rohan Ghosh Choudhuri and I am a third-year Physiological Science major who is also on the pre-med track. I am looking forward to being your chair for the G20 committee this year.

Coming from the Los Angeles area, I first joined Model UN in 9th grade and have loved the social element of it ever since. To me, Model UN is the perfect combination of learning about pertinent world issues while also learning how to most effectively work with others. As your chair, I hope to garner a captivating debate environment filled with productive conversations

Outside of Model UN, I love paying attention to any and all sports and am an avid twitter microinfluencer. I also love playing soccer, listening to music (Frank Ocean), exploring areas around Westwood, and thrifting. I am also involved with tutoring and enjoy teaching math (LASEO) and SexEd (REACH) to middle and high schoolers. As a pre-med student, I volunteer at the UCLA Medical Center and eventually hope to become an Orthopedic Surgeon with a focus in sports medicine.

In this specialized committee, we will focus on financial reform immediately following the Great Recession of 2008. Delegates will dive into a complicated world involving banking regulations, bailouts, and holistically reviving the global economy in the wake of the financial crisis. To complement the first topic of financial and banking reform, we will also be discussing debt relief for developing countries. The G20 is the leading group of nations that generously give aid to much of the rest of the world, and given the adverse economic circumstances the committee will be facing at the time, I am excited to see how all of you tackle this challenge.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me at g20@bruinmun.org.

Sincerely,

Rohan Ghosh Choudhuri | Chair, G20 | BruinMUN 32
