Committee Profile

The United Nations Women Committee serves as a dynamic platform for addressing critical global issues related to gender equality and women's empowerment. With a focus on two paramount topics, "Women and Children’s Access to HIV Treatment and Prevention" and "Broadening Women’s Leadership and Civic Engagement," this committee is dedicated to fostering comprehensive strategies for positive change.

Healthcare is one of the most basic necessities, yet millions of women worldwide are denied access to it. Addressed as Topic A, the ongoing global HIV/AIDS epidemic truly highlights the urgent need for equitable healthcare solutions. Delegates will deliberate on innovative approaches to ensure women and children have unhindered access to quality HIV prevention methods and treatment, while acknowledging socio-economic and societal barriers to such healthcare.

On another note, Topic B recognizes that gender parity extends beyond statistics. Delegates will engage in discussions on dismantling systemic barriers, amplifying women's voices in decision-making processes, and promoting civic participation. The committee seeks to empower women to lead and participate actively across political, economic, and social spheres.

The UN Women committee urges delegates to come up with creative resolutions that consider diverse perspectives and intersecting challenges. The committee's collaborative spirit will drive impactful solutions, reflecting the UN's commitment to fostering gender equality, social justice, and sustainable development worldwide.

Chair Letter

Hello Delegates!

My name is Kaylan So (she/they), and I am a second-year student at UCLA, majoring in Political science and minoring in French and History. On campus, I am involved in different facets of Model United Nations at UCLA and serve as the Assistant Outreach Director at Legal Underground, one of the largest pre-law organizations at UCLA. I’m from the Bay Area (East Bay has rights!), and I mostly came down to Southern California for the live music scene. Out of all the concerts I’ve been to, BTS and Rina Sawayama are probably my most favorite performers. If not at concerts, you will either find me exploring all of LA with my Korean American Student Association (KASA) family or writing up a poetry storm in my dorm.

I have always wanted to pursue a career in social justice and legal advocacy since a very young age after being inspired by Phoenix Wright from Ace Attorney and Elle Woods from Legally Blonde. However, nowadays, I am looking into international diplomacy to bridge the gap between different nations’ policies and eliminate discrimination against woman-identifying and queer populations. As a result, I am curious and excited to see what creative solutions you will come up with for UN Women, a committee I am very passionate about.

I have briefly participated in MUN during high school but decided to commit to it here—at UCLA—due to the amazing community I have found in this club. Their energy and passion for the issues we debate and for one another have encouraged me to serve as MUN at UCLA’s Chief of Staff for the 2023-24 school year! Other than being a part of Eboard, I have been a crisis staffer for LAMUN (our college conference) and competed with our travel team.

I am looking forward to meeting you all at BruinMUN 2023 and helping you discover your love for MUN!

Warmly,

Kaylan So | Chair | BruinMUN 31
