Novice United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

Committee Profile

Greetings delegates! I’m excited and honored to serve as your chair for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The UNFCCC is a riveting and salient body of the UN concerned with confronting some of our most existential global challenges; the compounding and cascading effects of climate change caused by continuing human pollution demands our most concerted efforts. In this committee, we will be discussing the preservation and conservation of the Arctic region, an area greatly impacted by the warming global temperatures, and vital to regulating our climate and contributing to freshwater inflow to the whole planet. We’ll also confer about promoting the advancement of sustainable forestry practices. Unsustainable forest management leads to drastic reductions in biodiversity, soil degradation, and increases in global temperatures- forming a grave pillar in our current climate crisis. The future of the Earth, and civilization as we know it is in our hands, delegates. I look forward to impassioned debate and lively diplomacy in the UNFCCC.

Chair Letter

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change at BruinMUN 2023! My name is Kimya Afshar (she/her) and I am so excited and honored to serve as your chair of this committee. I am a Sophomore here at UCLA, currently studying Cognitive Science with a double major in American Literature and Culture, and a planned specialization in computing. I hope to pursue a career in something that allows me to nurture my passion for language and history- I’m on the path to figuring out what that specifically might be.

Joining my high school's MUN team was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made: I got to nurture my historical curiosity beyond the classroom and make global geopolitics feel like less of a nebulous, faraway notion. This wonderful space for debate and diplomacy allowed me to foster my communication abilities and public speaking capabilities, and apply all of the miscellaneous Wikipedia knowledge I had accumulated throughout the years. After all this time, I’m still involved with MUN- i’ve chaired multiple committees, even including BruinMUN last year!

I’m very much looking forward to hearing from everyone about their respective countries. MUN conferences can be terrifying- especially if you’re improvising a speech, not completely comfortable with public speaking, or simply in a new environment. Discomfort will only lead to growth, fellow delegates! I applaud you for committing yourself to BruinMUN and implore you to speak boldly and with conviction. I encourage you to make mistakes, learn from them, apply yourself, and set an intention to reap all the possible benefits of this special experience.
